
Ghana’s Female tennis team, “The Diamond Rackets, this evening left the shores of Ghana for the 2021 International Women’s tennis tournament.
The Diamond team is made of Annette Cruickshank, Naa Shika Mckorley, Grace Tormega and Naa Mckorley.
The team will be led by Ghana’s ITF coach Albert Arthur who will also doubles as the team captain.
From the 15th to the 19 of this month, Ghana’s Diamond Rackets will lock horns with participating countries like France, Czech Republic, USA and others in Vilnius, Lithuania.
Octopus Media, in a brief interview with team coach Albert Arthur, he expressed his joy and satisfaction with the selection of the members of the Diamond team and was optimistic that the team, even though it’s their maiden participation, would make Ghana proud.
In 1963, the Federation Cup was launched to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
But in 2020, the name, Fed Cup was changed to Billie Jean King to honour the then world number one Tennis player called Billie Jean King.
It is the world’s largest annual women’s international team competition in terms of the number of nations that compete.
The Czech Republic dominated the Fed Cup in 2010, winning almost six of the ten competitions in the decade.
The men’s equivalent of the Billie Jean King Cup is the Davis Cup and the Czech Republic, Australia and the USA are the only countries to have held both cups at the same time.
The current ranked nations of the Fed Cup table with ITF points are France, Czech Republic and the USA, with Paraguay at the bottom of the top twenty countries.
There is no African country, yet in the top twenty countries.
The current chairperson of the Fed Cup/ Billie Jean King Cup is Madam Katrina Adams.
